Exploring Psalms with Dr. Tony Evans

Most of us recognize the power of music. Sometimes a particular piece of music is exactly what we need at a given moment to express our emotions, to call up good memories, to help haul us up out of depression or to find just the perfect way to tell God how much we honor, love and adore Him. Sometimes a song can help us in a way that a sermon or some good advice from a friend cannot. When you put words and music together, something powerful happens. This is undoubtedly why the Psalms are in the Bible and why they are one of the favorite biblical books for most believers.

The book of Psalms is one of the most unique books in the Bible.

The book of Psalms is one of the most unique books in the Bible. Instead of focusing on teaching or the stories of God’s interaction with His people, the psalms are the hymnbook of Israel. As such, they are music, poetry and prayer.

The psalms give us the words we need to cry out to God—in praise, in fear, in mourning or in faith. They are a prayer book for every believer, and there is an appropriate psalm for just about any emotion you might experience. Worship is the place to start finding your way forward, whatever you are struggling with. Let the psalms guide you into bringing God into the middle of whatever you are going through.
