You Can Breathe

In 2020, all of us became all too familiar with the refrain, “I can’t breathe.” While the words came literally attached to the deaths of Eric Garner and George Floyd, the refrain itself arose to symbolically describe the historic oppression of a group of people. What’s more, as the COVID pandemic raged, one of its deadly symptoms for some was the inability to breathe. When you can’t breathe, it means your life is in jeopardy.

But your ability to breathe freely means that you are able to take in a life-giving breath. Breath matters.

The Holy Spirit is literally the oxygen of God.

One of the names the Bible uses for the Holy Spirit is “the Breath.” He is literally the oxygen of God. Many Scriptures bring this out for us to see, but the meaning remains the same no matter what the context may be. When you and I understand that the Spirit is our oxygen—giving us the ability to breathe spiritually, we can fully grasp that He is the source of our spiritual life.

To the degree that we are breathing the Holy Spirit on a regular basis that we are able to experiencing the life and presence of God in our midst. It is also to the degree that we experience hope in the midst of the hopelessness.

Your spiritual respiratory system gets in trouble when you fail to take in the breath of the Spirit Himself. So, breathe deep the Breath of God. Let God’s Spirit fill you with His life.

Let the Holy Spirit fill you with His life.
