The pressure to keep up, measure up and somehow be enough can quietly drain the joy from the life God intended you to live. But scarcity was never His design for you. In today’s devotional, my sister, Priscilla Shirer, reminds us that God’s grace is not portioned out sparingly, but poured out abundantly. As we reflect on what it means to live life to the fullest, we’re invited to trust His overflowing provision and step confidently into every good work He’s prepared for us.
“Those who were with me saw the light, to be sure, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.”
—2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 CSB
Our God can be trusted.
He will grant you the full supply you need to excel at His purposes today, no matter how varied or prodigious those tasks may be. Every decision you need to make, every task you need to accomplish, every relationship you need to navigate, every element of daily life you need to traverse, God has already perfectly matched it up with an equivalent-to-overflowing supply of His grace.
And you must believe this . . .because whether or not you do will directly affect your ability to function out of this overflow in your daily life. When you truly believe that you will always have everything you need, and that because of His extravagant grace you will never lack, you’ll be more willing and able to give freely of yourself and your resources, certain that God will always replenish your supply.
People who operate from a position of perceived lack and deficiency are stingy with their time, selfish with their resources, and tightfisted with their energy. They’re reluctant to sow of themselves into the lives of others, afraid they don’t have enough to do it with—or that if they do, they won’t have enough left over for themselves—enough time, energy, talent, money, skill, patience.
But whenever we operate that way, our truly important tasks and relationships in life—the ones that promise blessing to us as well as to others—go unattended and undone. Worse, we miss out on the privilege to fully participate in them, much less “excel” in them. When we don’t feel as though we have the proper amount or type of resources, we recoil into a shell of insecurity instead of bursting with the power and provision of God. Therefore the “work” misses out on our touch. And we miss the many ways our “every good work” could touch us—the impact, the memories, the lessons, the experiences that God is knitting together to become a key part of our story.
This is why we must have confidence in His overflowing grace and provision and be content with what we have—because what He has given is what we need, and what He’s sovereignly withheld isn’t necessary to the completion of the task. Otherwise He’d have given it. Whatever He’s given or not given, He’s done for a specific reason—a reason known only to Him perhaps, but a reason you can trust with full confidence, sight unseen.
When you choose to recognize this, fully trusting in His continued, abundant supply, you’ll be able to engage in life in a way you never have before. You’ll be living life to the fullest.
We pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power.
