Holding Fast to the Name

Pergamum was praised because they held fast to Christ’s name even while surrounded by enormous pressure. Faithfulness in a hostile culture is never easy. It is like trying to stand still on an escalator that is moving down. Unless you plant your feet with determination, you get carried away.

Faithfulness in a hostile culture is never easy.

The believers in that city lived where Jesus Himself said Satan’s throne was located. That was not a poetic flourish. Pergamum was dominated by idols, temples and emperor worship. Every street corner pulled people toward compromise. Yet the faithful refused to deny Christ. Their circumstances tested them daily, but their loyalty held. That is what overcomers do. They hold on when others let go.

The pressure to deny Christ may look different in our day. For some, it comes as ridicule from friends or coworkers. For others, it shows up in rejection by family or the loss of opportunities because of faithfulness to biblical convictions. Sometimes it is the quiet temptation to keep silent when speaking the truth would cost us comfort. But whatever the form, the call remains the same: stand firm. Do not loosen your grip.

An overcomer clings to the name of Jesus like a lifeline in the storm.

An overcomer clings to the name of Jesus like a lifeline in the storm. When the culture demands silence, they boldly confess Him. When temptation whispers compromise, they answer with loyalty. To hold fast to His name is to rest in the power of the only name that saves, delivers and overcomes. Victory is not found in blending in but in standing firm.
