There are seasons in life when it feels as though everything is changing at once.
Children grow up. Roles shift. Ministries evolve. The familiar becomes unfamiliar, and the things we once assumed would remain constant seem to move beneath our feet.
Lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on legacy. Perhaps it is because of conversations surrounding the church our family has been deeply involved with and the years of faithfulness that have brought it to this moment. Perhaps it is because I can see another milestone approaching for my youngest son as he prepares to enter his senior year. I’m realizing that the years which for so long seemed to stretch endlessly ahead are somehow becoming fewer. Whatever the reason, this season has invited me to pause and consider what truly remains when so much around us is changing.
When circumstances shift, they often reveal what we’ve been building our lives upon.
The prophet Isaiah wrote:
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8 ESV).
What a comforting truth. So much of life feels temporary. Seasons come and go. Opportunities begin and end. Even the strongest foundations of this world are not permanent. Yet God’s Word remains. His character remains. His promises remain.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). In a world marked by constant change, we serve a Savior who is unchanging. His faithfulness is not dependent upon our circumstances, and His presence is not diminished by uncertainty.
I’ve often thought of legacy as something we leave behind—the faith we pass to our children, the investments we make in others, the ministries that continue after we are gone. Those things matter deeply. But I’m learning that legacy is not only about what remains after us. It is also about what remains within us.
When the distractions are stripped away, what is left?
Is my confidence still anchored in Christ? Is my hope still secure? Am I still trusting the goodness of God when the future feels uncertain?
The psalmist wrote, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Not a distant help. Not a someday help. A present help.
That word present has been speaking to me lately.
God is not only found in yesterday’s victories or tomorrow’s possibilities. He is present in today’s realities. He is present in seasons of celebration and seasons of waiting. He is present in moments of clarity and in moments filled with questions.
And as I reflect on the generations that have gone before me and those that will follow after, I am reminded of the words of the psalmist: “Your faithfulness continues through all generations” (Psalm 119:90 NIV).
That is the legacy that matters most.
Buildings age. Programs change. Seasons pass. But the faithfulness of God endures. A life rooted in Christ bears fruit that reaches farther than we can see and lasts longer than we can imagine.
So wherever this season finds you, take heart. The things around us may change, but the One who holds us does not. And when everything else is shaken, we discover again the beautiful truth that He is enough.
